Total Eclipse of the Art

On Monday, April 8, 2024, Newfields hosted nearly 5,000 guests for a once-in-a-lifetime celestial spectacle that combined what Newfields does best, art and nature.

The day-long festival featured four stages with live music by The Molly Ringwalds and Rock E Bassoon and DJs including Godzillest, Niko Flores, and DJ Metrognome. Guests enjoyed dozens of food and beverage choices from local vendors, plus our own fabulous culinary arts department.

Guests arrived early in the morning to a picture-perfect cloudless sky and historically comfortable temperatures. Many travelled from far-and-wide and others from close by. The first duo in line popped up their chairs hours before 11 AM, visiting from Texas to see their favorite band, The Molly Ringwalds, usher in totality at Newfields. Many more joined us from surrounding neighborhoods in hopes of catching the eclipse from the best spot in town.

Inside, the Indianapolis Museum of Art was open and welcomed thousands of guests to see four floors of world-class artwork, including special exhibitions Daughter / Mother / Ancestor: Threads of Connection and THE LUME Indianapolis featuring Dali Alive.

At about 3 PM the sun was visibly ducking behind the moon, and the temperature dropped and the atmosphere quieted. By 3:06 PM darkness fell, and 5,000 guests erupted in cheers.
