TIMELINE

Waller Gallery will operate on a cycle of two submission and exhibition sequences:

Sequence 1

Submit September 1 - February 28  |  Notify  by June 30  |  Exhibit January - June

Applications submitted between September 1 and February 28 will be considered for one exhibition slot from January to June of the following calendar year. Decisions for this application period will be sent by June 30.

Sequence 2

Submit March 1 - August 31  |  Notify  by December 31  |  Exhibit July - December

Applications submitted between March 1 and August 31 will be considered for one exhibition slot from July to December of the following calendar year. Decisions for this application period will be sent by December 31.

 

Proposal Criteria

  • COMMUNITY: Exhibition features artist/community group with connection to Indianapolis and considers an issue that is relevant/engaging to the Indianapolis community.
  • INCLUSIVITY + RELEVANCE: Exhibition features work by one/multiple artist(s) that identify as disabled, female, LGBTQIA+, Black, Indigenous, or a Person of Color. Exhibition content is accessible to diverse audiences.
  • INTENTIONAL PARTNERSHIP: Exhibition provides an opportunity to grow or deepend relationships with a community partner.

FAQs

Where is Waller Gallery located?
Waller Gallery is located on the first floor of the Indianapolis Museum of Art at Newfields, across from The Museum & Garden Shop.

 

What type of exhibitions are hosted in Waller Gallery?
Waller Gallery is dedicated to sharing the diverse narratives of Indiana communities through exhibitions to foster intentional partnerships.

 

What is the size of Waller Gallery?
Waller Gallery is 48’ 10” by 23’ 1” overall. The interior display walls are 10’ 4” tall and the perimeter display walls are 8’ tall. The number of artworks displayed is dependent upon the size of each artwork, but approximately 40 artworks depending on size. 

 

What are the artwork requirements?

  • All artwork must be displayed inside the gallery and cannot be located outside the gallery entrance.
  • A label identifying the artist, title, and medium must be affixed to the back of each artwork.
  • For all two-dimensional artwork, the size limitation is 42” x 36” in any direction including the frame.
  • Strap hangers or d-rings hanging hardware are required for all two-dimensional artwork.
  • Newfields can accommodate no more than three (3) total three-dimensional objects with the following restrictions:
    • Each three-dimensional artwork must have a vitrine and pedestal which will be provided by Newfields.
    • Newfields can accept two (2) three-dimensional artworks with the size limitation of 24” H x 18” W x 18” D.
    • Newfields can accept one (1) three-dimensional artwork with the size limitation of 24” H x 12” W x 12” D.
    • All three-dimensional artwork must be self-stable within each display case or stable with the use of a mount.
    • Mounts must be provided by the artists and require the approval of Newfields.
    • Three-dimensional artwork that will be on a pedestal cannot exceed the maximum weight of 100 lbs.
    • The maximum number of artworks that can be safely displayed in the gallery space is limited to 30 works. Any amendments to this number will be at Newfields’ discretion.

 

What will Newfields ask my organization to provide?
An illustrated checklist, label copy, introductory text, and a title suggestion.

 

What does Newfields provide?
Artwork gallery layout based on the illustrated checklist, installation labor, exhibition graphics, and artwork identification wall labels for each artwork.

Newfields does not provide any financial support/stipends for exhibiting in Waller Gallery. 

 

Can events be held in conjunction with an exhibition?
Exhibiting organizations can work with a Newfields representative to coordinate any events/opening receptions, programming, and media coverage that occur in conjunction with the exhibition. Newfields does not cover costs associated with these types of events but is happy to work with you on your ideas.

 

Can artworks exhibited in Waller Gallery be listed for sale? 
The sale of artworks exhibited in Waller Gallery is allowed, but not required. This decision is left up to the exhibiting organization. If your organization decides to list exhibited artworks for sale, all logistics and coordination for listings, sales, and processing of sales are the responsibility of the exhibiting organization.

 

Are there any costs/insurance associated with exhibiting in Waller Gallery?
There is no fee to exhibit in Waller Gallery. However, there may be costs associated with properly preparing artwork for hanging and transporting artwork to the museum.

Exhibiting organizations are required to carry commercial general liability insurance in the amount of one million USD ($1,000,000.00). If your organization does not already carry this insurance, there may be an additional cost with your insurance company to obtain this insurance.
