Libraries & Archives

The Indianapolis Museum of Art at Newfields has two library collections on its Indianapolis campus. The Stout Reference Library, located within the Museum, focuses on the encyclopedic collection of the Indianapolis Museum of Art, while also providing general information about art and art history of all periods. The Horticultural Society Library is located within the Stout Reference Library and focuses on specific plant families, landscaping and horticulture.

Stout Reference Library

The Stout Reference Library is a noncirculating library with a primary focus on the Indianapolis Museum of Art’s collection and the visual arts more broadly. The selection of about 120,000 volumes includes books, periodicals, auction catalogs, ephemera files, and museum and gallery publications from around the world. The library also subscribes to electronic databases supporting art history and market research.

Horticultural Society Library

Learn about gardening and related topics at the Horticultural Society Library. The library is a curated collection that includes reference books and books on landscaping, public garden destinations, garden history, specific categories (such as orchids, bulbs, or plant genera), and horticulture.

The Horticultural Society Library is located within the Stout Reference Library, and its holdings can be searched through the Indianapolis Public Library catalog.

Archives

The Indianapolis Museum of Art Archives at Newfields collects, preserves, and makes accessible the historical records produced by Newfields and its predecessors, the John Herron Art Institute and the Art Association of Indianapolis. These records are made available for the administrative support of current institutional activities, the successful stewardship of the Indianapolis Museum of Art collections, and for historical research conducted by staff and the public.
