Works in our permanent collection are on the move more than you might think. Between loans to other institutions, collection research, and preventative conservation, we are always updating our spaces so that there is new art for you to experience.

In the spirit of our evening event, Gallery Forward, where guests get a guided preview of newly opened exhibitions and significant collection rotations, here’s a few recent changes at the Indianapolis Museum of Art at Newfields that you can explore on your own.

Labor and Leisure at the Turn of the Century

Opened August 26, 2025

This installation of works discusses the emergence of new painting styles in the late nineteenth century, coinciding with the rise of industry and its effects on labor, the environment, and an improvement of the quality of life.

Theater Performance in Japan

Floor 3, Asian Galleries K308, K310
Opened October 20, 2025

These works explore depictions of traditional Japanese theatre arts and include masks used in stage performances.

Indigenous Australian Art from the IMA

Floor 4, THE LUME Indianapolis
Opened May 10, 2025

In the final gallery of THE LUME experience, you’ll find Indigenous Australian bark paintings from the Indianapolis Museum of Art’s permanent collection. Come see these works in person in Connection: Land, Water, Sky, only on display until the end of February 2026.
