For Charles and Barbara Malinowski, becoming Newfields Members in 2023 was a way to support an institution they admired. Since then, membership has become a regular part of their lives, allowing them to revisit favorite artworks, discover new exhibitions, and enjoy Members-only experiences throughout the year.
"Our primary reason for becoming Newfields Members was a desire to give back for so much that we received when we visited," Charles said. "There is also the value of our membership investment. We look forward to dropping in just because we can." That flexibility is one of the couple's favorite benefits. After attending church on Sundays, they'll often stop by Newfields for a leisurely stroll through the IMA Galleries before enjoying brunch at The Café.
Asked what they enjoy most about Newfields, the Malinowskis stated, “Diversity in all its wonderful variations. Whether it is paintings or textiles or seeing the thousands of spring bulbs in bloom or enjoying a beverage in The Beer Garden."

The couple also credits the people who work and volunteer at Newfields with making every visit memorable. "The paid and volunteer staff are amazing," said Charles. "From the friendly Security team to member services and the very knowledgeable docents hosting tours."
Those docent-led tours have helped the Malinowskis see familiar artworks in new ways. "We have gained a greater understanding of the art and artists on exhibition,” said Barbara. “For example, learning how historic events and personal experiences shaped the works of Alma Thomas and Vincent van Gogh. They’re such stunning works that we can immerse ourselves in at Newfields."
The insights they gain from the docents stay with the couple long after the tours end, especially during quiet moments when they can experience the collection on their own. During Member Mornings: Early Access to Newfields, Charles and Barbara cherish the opportunity to stand just feet away from masterpieces by Rembrandt, Paul Gauguin, and Edward Hopper without the bustle of larger crowds.
"We find it very special to have one-on-one time with some of the greatest works of art...Walking right up to those paintings and enjoying those moments of private, undisturbed joy is something we'll never take for granted."

While uninterrupted time with the collection remains one of the couple’s favorite aspects of membership, some of their most unforgettable memories were made during Newfields’ seasonal festivals. They still vividly remember arriving for a Member Preview of Harvest Nights as the sun was setting and a full moon rose in its place. "Thousands of jack-o'-lanterns were glowing in the slightly creepy evening fog," Charles recalled. "It was truly a memorable moment."

Another can’t-miss event for the Malinowskis is the Member Preview of Art in Bloom. "The Newfields staff and floral artists work magic in the galleries and grounds," Barbara said. "Art in Bloom is woven throughout the Museum and The Garden, and it's something we look forward to every year."

For Charles and Barbara, membership has become more than an annual investment. It’s a tradition that continues to offer new discoveries, lasting memories, and countless reasons to return to Newfields.
