August 27, 2025
August is Member Appreciation Month—and we’re celebrating you and your contributions all month long! You make exceptional experiences with art and nature possible at Newfields every day. Our 22,000 Member households are the heart of the institution. Membership dues help support Newfields’ day-to-day operating expenses, such as the landscaping and maintenance needed to keep The Garden beautiful as well as the careful conservation of the IMA’s collection. We asked: What do our Members love about Newfields?
Leela Rao moved to Indianapolis from Washington, D.C. in 2015. Knowing Leela’s love of art, her colleagues purchased her a two-year Membership to Newfields as a parting gift. Over the past decade, Leela has thoroughly enjoyed her Membership and relationship with Newfields, becoming a volunteer and recently graduating from Newfields’ Docent Program. She hopes to continue enjoying everything Newfields has to offer for many years to come.

Leela’s favorite things at Newfields are the ever-changing, beautiful gardens, as well as the special exhibitions and Docent Tours in the IMA Galleries. “I also really like attending the many campus-wide programs that are free for Members,” said Leela. “I have learned a lot about the artists featured in the IMA Galleries and about art in general from attending the curator-led lectures for Members.”
Visiting Newfields with her family and grandchildren over the years is particularly meaningful, providing an opportunity to bond and make lasting memories. “[They] love the fountains and enjoy playing in the grass. Lilly House during Harvest Nights and Winterlights are always special. The cafés, too. And, of course, The Virginia B. Fairbanks Art & Nature Park.”
