Giants Mural by modestartwerks
A new Giant has arrived at Newfields.
In celebration of Giants: Art from the Dean Collection of Swizz Beatz and Alicia Keys presented by JPMorganChase, Newfields and Indy Arts Council partnered with Indianapolis-based artist Nathaniel Johnson, known as ModestArtWerks, to create a large-scale mural inside the Newfields parking garage.
Johnson brought the Giants logo to life through his distinctive combination of graffiti, typography and hand-lettered calligraphy, creating a bold new welcome for guests arriving at Newfields.
The project was developed as a unique way to build excitement for the arrival of Giants while also using the moment to celebrate an artist working in the Indianapolis community. The partnership with Indy Arts Council brought together a major exhibition and local creative talent, extending the spirit of Giants beyond the galleries and into an unexpected space on the Newfields campus.

Meet the Artist
An Illinois-born, Midwest-raised artist based in Indianapolis, Johnson received his formal education in design and graphic arts from Boston University. His continued study of typography and passion for the organic beauty of hand-lettering have shaped a style that brings together two contrasting traditions: the youthful energy and freedom of graffiti and the form and grace of calligraphy.
For the Newfields mural, Johnson drew inspiration from early 2000s street art and the elegance of hand-lettered calligraphy. Through the piece, he aimed to showcase the duality of youthful, spirited expression alongside form and grace.
Johnson’s work has been featured in public projects throughout Indianapolis, including the 2024 NBA All-Star Weekend murals on Pennsylvania Avenue, Chromatic 2021 in Broad Ripple and the Eighth Day Distillery Artist Series 2024.
