Green Transportation and Strategic Land Use

By using alternative forms of transportation, as a community, we can limit the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.

Green transportation includes all modes of transportation that reduce emissions caused by burning fossil fuels. This includes walking, biking, electric-powered vehicles, ride sharing, and public transit. By using alternative forms of transportation, as a community, we can limit the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.

At Newfields, we encourage visitors and employees to arrive using green transportation. Bike racks can be found on the main campus in the parking garage, outside the Efroymson Family Entrance Pavilion, near the Waller Bridge, and on the grounds of Fairbanks Park. Additionally, there are bus stops at both the 38th Street and Michigan Rd. entrances. Check IndyGo for latest routes and schedules.

Bike Share: Newfields has partnered with Pacers Bike Share to create a hub along the towpath adjacent to the Citizens Energy Canal in front of The Virginia B. Fairbanks Art & Nature Park. The path connects to the Monon Trail in Broad Ripple and the White River Wapahani Trail, making Newfields easily accessible by bike from anywhere in the city.

While we encourage other transportation, many of our visitors still need to travel by car. We have created a parking green with 200 spaces to allow for a safer and more sustainable way to park cars on grass. Reinforced with recycled plastic product called GEOBLOCK that lays flat underneath the grass, this parking green distributes the weight of a vehicle to help grass grow back quicker and healthier. The area continues to be a grass lawn and is only used for parking during peak attendance periods.
