Volunteer Opportunities

Individual

Newfields offers year-round and seasonal volunteer opportunities both inside and outside with a variety of openings to accommodate your schedule.

Groups

Group volunteerism at Newfields is typically an outdoor experience with projects ranging from planting annuals, removing invasive species, or helping with one of our annual events such as Harvest Nights or Winterlights. Be prepared to dress for the outdoors and wear closed-toe shoes. We will provide the tools and training to fit the goals of your group, whether it’s a big corporation, small organization, sports team, or a family.

Email volunteer@discovernewfields.org for more details and to sign up.

The Process

Complete the Volunteer Form.

Your name and email will be distributed to one of our Lead Volunteers who will contact you to set up a phone interview. This is a great opportunity for you to ask questions and learn what roles would be best for you.

All volunteers are required to complete a background check before they can come on-site. You must have a valid Social Security Number to complete the background screening.

Upon the completion of your background check, you will be invited to attend a Virtual Orientation where we review campus policies, volunteer opportunities, and more.

The last step to volunteering is to return a signed copy of our Volunteer Handbook.

Sign up for a First Shift Orientation to receive a guided tour of your work area, your volunteer badge, and exclusive merchandise.

FAQs

We welcome all levels of experience and education for those over the age of 18 to apply for the Newfields Volunteer Program.

We understand volunteers often have many obligations outside of the institution. We do not have a minimum hour requirement for volunteers.

Each volunteer opportunity has unique expectations. From digging in The Garden to welcoming guests to Winterlights, we offer volunteer opportunities for every interest. If you have questions about any opportunities, please reach out to volunteer@discovernewfields.org.

From master gardeners to the budding green thumb, we accept volunteers of every type.

While we currently do not offer youth volunteer opportunities, we deeply value the enthusiasm and passion that young individuals bring to our mission. We are continuously exploring ways to engage with youth volunteers in the future and are excited about the potential for collaborative projects and meaningful contributions from the younger generation.

At this time, Newfields does not have a set internship program; however, we do post our grant funded internships/fellowships on our career page if open.

The first step is to become a Newfields volunteer. Once you have joined our volunteer program, you can help in areas that will prepare you for the docent program, or that just sound interesting.

Docent training classes are planned on a yearly basis. Each docent class receives training to prepare them for the program.
