Carlos Rolón: Hilos de resurgimiento (Threads of Resurgence)

Threads of Resurgence features six newly commissioned large-scale works constructed from repurposed FEMA-distributed tarps that were once used as makeshift roofs in Puerto Rican communities impacted by climate disaster.

Artist Carlos Rolón transforms this recognizable utilitarian material into beautiful tapestries that symbolize survival and endurance. The embroidered works also bring awareness to the struggles of Puerto Ricans affected by multiple recent natural disasters and confronts the realities of Puerto Rico's complex relationship with colonialism and economic hardship.

This insightful exhibition is fully bilingual and precedes an exhibition of Rolón’s tarp works at the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art in Overland Park, Kansas. The pieces in both shows are the result of the artist’s partnership with PRoTechos, a non-profit organization working to provide more sustainable roofing to communities impacted by climate disaster in Puerto Rico. As tarp roofs are replaced with more stable solutions, they are sent to Rolón who transforms them into the beautiful pieces in each exhibition.
