Inspired By...
Inspired By… is an annual exhibition featuring artwork by K-12 students across the state of Indiana. Each year a masterwork from the Indianapolis Museum of Art collection is selected as the inspiration piece. Teachers may build a lesson and have students create their own work of art inspired by the selected masterwork for submission to this juried show.
The inspiration piece will be on view in the IMA Galleries. Please schedule a field trip if you would like to view the work with your class in person.

2026-2027 SCHOOL YEAR:
Inspired By Whiskers and Ruffs
Historically, portraiture established identity, power, and legacy, serving as a visual record of history and social status. Modern portraiture allows for more storytelling and the challenging of societal narratives.
From George Gower to Rembrandt van Rijn, Amedeo Modigliani to Andy Warhol, Hugh M. Poe to Roberto Lugo, the Indianapolis Museum of Art's collection of portraits offers a variety of options for inspiration.
By recreating portraits and replacing the subject with an animal, student artists are given the opportunity to celebrate their identity, preserve a beloved animal’s legacy, challenge stereotypes, and give life to unsung narratives.
Call for entry coming soon.
