Field Trips
Docent led field trips are available for grades Pre-K through six. See the descriptions below. Please request your field trip three weeks in advance and tours four weeks in advance.
Grades Pre-K–K: Let’s Look at Art! (Max 40 Students)
This tour is designed to encourage Pre-K and Kindergarten children to explore the world of art and art museums. It will engage each child’s imagination while investigating works of art. Through inquiry conversations about artwork, the children will make personal connections and share their observations.
Grades 1–3: Art Investigators (Max 60 Students)
As Art Investigators, students will explore many aspects of art in the Indianapolis Museum of Art. Through observing, describing, and sharing ideas – students will learn to interpret by drawing on clues, prior knowledge, and their imaginations. Select one of the following themes:
Faces – Explore how faces are used to show emotions, tell stories, and illustrate ideas.
Places – Investigate the impact of the surroundings – interiors, landscapes, cityscapes, seascapes, and other natural settings – on works of art.
Learning to Look - Use careful observation, imagination, and critical thinking to explore the building blocks of artwork.
Grades 4–6 (Max 60 Students)
STEM + Art: Sharing many of the concepts used in the STEM fields, this tour will focus on the connections between the artist’s creative thinking and their problem solving in the creation of a piece. Students will collaborate on a planned activity at the end of the tour.
Painting & Poetry: Students will look closely at landscapes and will explore some ways in which a related poem can enhance the experience of looking. Students will select a landscape they enjoy and will compose a first draft of a cinquain in response to the painting
Sketching in the Galleries: Grades 3–12
Enrich your Newfields visit and spend time sketching in the galleries. School groups using graphite pencils (no colored pencils, please) are welcome to sketch in the IMA Galleries. Please note on your tour request that you would like to have your students sketch. Easels and wet materials are not allowed in the galleries. If your group has special requests, contact the Coordinator of School and Group Services at schooltours@discovernewfields.org at least 30 days before your field trip.
