FULL BIO

Welcome to Newfields!

Newfields is a 152-acre anchor cultural institution—home of the Indianapolis Museum of Art, The Garden, and the Virginia B. Fairbanks Art & Nature Park.

Newfields is steadfastly committed to “enriching lives through exceptional experiences with art and nature.” We are a must-see destination with something for everyone. My goal is for two people to chat about a visit to Indianapolis, and one will say, “Oh, you HAVE to go to Newfields. It will change your life.”

We are celebrating our 140th anniversary honoring our founder suffragette May Wright Sewall, our everlasting commitment to continuing the preservation of legacy and tradition, stimulating transformation and innovation, and furthering the appreciation of arts and nature.

I am blessed to lead Newfields. We are deeply invested in being an integral part of building a beloved community by blending art, nature, and humanity. Please join us this spring to experience the vibrancy and beauty of all things Newfields.

 Gratefully,

 Colette Pierce Burnette

President & CEO

BUILDING A BELOVED COMMUNITY

We. The Culture: Works by The Eighteen Art Collective was the first exhibition to open under Dr. Burnette, and was an incredibly rewarding experience. The exhibition features works by 18 Indianapolis-based artists known as The Eighteen Art collective and is a celebration of the power of art as a tool for social justice.

In September 2022, Dr.  Burnette was proud to help open The Wild Birds Unlimited Native Pollinator Meadow in The Virginia B. Fairbanks Art and Nature Park. This is the largest native pollinator meadow in Indianapolis and was made possible through support from local philanthropists and founders of Wild Birds Unlimited, Nancy & Jim Carpenter.

Together with her team, Dr. Burnette transformed a previously drab promenade in the museum into an exhibition that would reflect Newfields’ mission. Here Dr. Burnette brings her flagship project to life: the first-ever all-staff art exhibition, Artists Among Us. Featuring 72 original works from 21 departments across Newfields.

RENAISSANCE & REVIVAL

TAKE A WALK IN HER SHOES

In the News

"Burnette’s vision for Newfields is ‘lofty and big,’ she said. However, she has no doubt she can make her vision a reality. Although her time here will likely be a small window in the long history of the institution, Burnette said she hopes people will look at her tenure as a ‘true renaissance moment."

"I feel very strongly that we’re living in a time [of] renaissance, and it’s personally rewarding to be at Newfields in this time in its history and the role we can play to make that renaissance be remembered."

"When I was a little girl, my mother got two weeks of vacation, during which she would take my sister and me to every museum in Cleveland…When I think about that, she was positioning us in a world that we weren’t a part of by showing us that we could be integrated into it."

"I'm very community minded and I'm committed to what Dr. King called building a beloved community and people will expect to see some really exciting and new and different programming."

WFYI

"I have an affinity for education. Looking for all kinds of ways to educate people, open minds, and warm hearts. And art and nature are definitely vehicles for that."

"In my day-to-day life, equity is a primary focus for me, and it takes work to diversify my workplace and workforce, to diversify our collection, to diversify our programming. As long as I’m using my gift in this assignment, our driving force will be to enrich lives with equity in mind."
