Licensing Resources

 

Reproductions of the Indianapolis Museum of Art collection, The Garden, Lilly House, Miller House and Garden, The Virginia B. Fairbanks Art & Nature Park, and Newfields’ buildings may be licensed for scholarly, commercial, or personal uses. Information about reproductions of materials from the Newfields Archives can be found on the Copying and Publishing page of Newfields’ website. 

 

Many image files of public domain artworks from the Indianapolis Museum of Art collection are available for free download through our Open Access program on the individual artwork’s collection pages. Simply look for the download arrow icon to access high-resolution JPEG files. No further permission or paperwork is required by Newfields for any use of these public domain artworks. If you require a larger TIFF file for your publication or project, please complete the Licensing Request Form below.

 

All other requests are reviewed on an individual basis and fees may apply.

Licensing Fee Schedule

SCHOLARLY USE

Includes, but is not limited to, books, exhibition catalogues, and similar publications by libraries, museums, and non-profit organizations; public-television broadcasts; and other items made available to a relatively limited audience.

 

COMMERCIAL USE

Includes, but is not limited to, for-profit publications; textbooks, trade books, reference books, supplemental course readers, and curriculum materials for K–12; motion pictures, commercial television, and video productions; large-circulation or mass-market magazines; printed or televised advertisements; calendars, posters, museum reproductions, postcards, and note cards; other items made available to a relatively wide audience.

 

PERSONAL USE

Includes, but is not limited to, study, educational, or research purposes only and may not be published or reproduced.

 

CREDIT LINE

Reproductions must be accompanied by the credit line supplied by Newfields.

 

Public domain image files downloaded through Newfields’ Open Access program should be credited: "Image courtesy of the Indianapolis Museum of Art at Newfields.”

 

Additional caption information is available by selecting “Artwork Caption” below the artwork image and, when applicable, is also provided in the reproduction licensing contract.

 

PUBLICATION GRATIS COPIES

While there are no restrictions or conditions for the use of downloadable public domain image files, Newfields would appreciate receiving a gratis copy of publications or projects containing Indianapolis Museum of Art collection artworks in order to retain the record of how reproductions are utilized.

If you are reproducing an Open Access image in a publication, please complete our Image Use Information form to provide us with information  about your specific use to help Newfields retain the bibliographic record of where artwork reproductions are utilized.

Artworks that appear in the image file(s) on the individual artwork’s collection pages may be in copyright or have other legal and/or cultural restrictions to their use. For clarity, Newfields does not claim copyright to the image files created by Newfields of artworks in the Indianapolis Museum of Art’s collection. Newfields makes every effort to ascertain the copyright status of artworks in the Indianapolis Museum of Art’s collection. Please refer to the RightsStatements.org statement on the individual artwork’s collection pages for information about the current copyright status of the artwork. Additionally, some artworks may include Local Context’s Notices or Labels that attribute cultural authority of the artwork’s heritage and data.   

 

Please note that in many cases Newfields owns only the physical object and does not assume responsibility for the associated intellectual property, including copyright, or any other legal rights involved in the publication and reproduction of materials from its collections. Newfields' preparation and/or reproduction fees, when applicable, do not include any fees that may be due separately to the rights owner(s) or administrator(s) (e.g., creator, representing gallery, estate, etc.).

 

While the Legal Affairs & Intellectual Property Department will assist applicants, when possible, with the identity and/or contact information, it is the responsibility of the applicant to obtain permission from the rights owner(s) or administrator(s). If you have information about Newfields’ artworks rights holders that is not currently displayed, please contact the Legal Affairs and Intellectual Property department.

 

Licensing REQUEST FORM

In order to process your request, we need to determine what kind(s) of content, file type(s), reproduction rights, and fees may be involved. Please fill out the following in as much detail as possible.

  • Requests must include the name of the applicant, intended use, author(s), publisher(s), anticipated date of publication or release, requested content, and file format requirements.
  • Files will not be provided to the applicant until the payment of fees, if applicable, is received by Newfields.

 

Please Note: Requests must be submitted at least eight (8) weeks prior to the date the file(s) are needed to ensure adequate processing time.
